The answer is Mary Shelley of course.  I found this through a friend today and it reminded me of an interesting point.

Most people know of Mary Shelley.  Most people of those most people know she was a woman.  But so often, the historical contributions of women seem to fall by the wayside, becoming something that simply popped up around that year.  We know of many men who have done many great things — Galileo, da Vinci, Socrates.

But we will do well to be reminded that science fiction was invented by a woman.
